The Georgia General Assembly chartered what was then called a Technological School in Atlanta (present-day Tech's campus) on March 29, 1885, authorizing it to grant both bachelor's and master's degrees. This school would eventually grow into what is now known as Georgia Tech.

 On October 13, 1885, Atlanta pioneer Richard Peters donated to some Georgia Tech trustees 3 acres (1.2 ha) of land for a new school called The Industrial School of Atlanta. The school opened on October 5, 1888 in a small building at No. 67, part of Atlanta's Prudential Building at 562 and 564 Market Street (now Ted Turner Drive NW). Two days later, on October 7th, construction began on what is now known as Old Campus.
